This video is a step-by-step guide to help you decide if you need a 5th wheel roller / sliding 5th wheel hitch or an offset gooseneck ball. We’ll use a simple equation and a couple measurements from your truck and trailer.
There are many questions associated with 5th wheel towing, particularly in relation to truck bed size and short bed trucks: What kind of hitch do I need for a 5th wheel? Do I need a long bed to tow a 5th wheel? Do I have to have a sliding 5th wheel hitch in a short bed truck? What size truck do I need to pull a 5th wheel?
A 5th wheel roller or short bed 5th wheel hitch provides extra clearance when towing a 5th wheel trailer, particularly when making turns. If your truck bed does not provide enough room for the trailer overhang, a roller may provide the extra clearance needed.
In this video, we will walk through the steps needed to answer the question: how to determine if a roller or sliding 5th wheel hitch is needed, whether you have a long bed or short bed truck.
First, measure the width of the 5th wheel trailer and divide by two (X). Common trailer widths include 84”, 96” and 102”.
Next, measure from the center of the 5th wheel hitch / coupling point to the cab of the truck (Y).
Then, apply the equation: Y - X = Z.
If Z is positive, you have enough clearance in the truck bed without a roller. If Z is 0 or negative, a roller will be needed for extra clearance.

Stephanie from CURT Group talks about all-new ShockDrop™ technology from CURT at the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
ShockDrop™ is a series of cushion hitch products that provide a more comfortable, confident towing experience. They use an adaptive, dynamic isolator to suppress vibrations, strain on the vehicle and even the tendency for trailer sway.
Leading the way in our ShockDrop™ series is the new Rebellion™ XD ball mount – an adjustable cushion hitch that enhances control and comfort, without the complicated design of competitive options. Rebellion™ XD is highly effective, thoroughly tested and virtually maintenance-free.
We also offer our RockerBall™ – a cushion hitch trailer ball that can be retrofitted onto any existing ball mount with a 2-1/2” tongue.
A must for extended trips, the EasyRider SpareTire is a complete wheel-replacement kit specifically designed for our EasyRider™ trailer. It attaches easily to the trailer’s frame with included mounting hardware, so the spare’s always there when you need it. Why let a flat take the air out of your adventures?
CURT SecureLatch™ lunette rings feature a unique drop-in pin that provides enhanced trailer security. The integrated pin can accept a padlock to keep your trailer from being coupled when left unattended, and it easily turns 90 degrees to the side while towing.
SecureLatch™ pintle rings are available in two styles to fit any trailer setup: a flush-mount style and a channel style. Channel lunette rings are adjustable to perfectly level your trailer while towing.
Our lunette rings are available in a variety of sizes and weight capacities, including standard ring diameters of 2-1/2 inches and 3 inches. We also offer a maximum gross trailer weight capacity option of 60,000 pounds.
Each CURT SecureLatch™ lunette ring comes with a premium dark grey teridium powder coat finish for a professional look and long-lasting weather resistance.
